Wedding Planning
The big day is finally here! I’ll be married to the love of my life tomorrow. Everything we’ve planned during the last several months will come together tomorrow (I hope!). Ladies, if you are a bride-to-be and are planning your wedding, I want to share with you a few things that helped me during the time I planned our wedding ceremony and reception. I hope they are helpful to you.
You’ve heard that “diamonds are a girl’s best friend”, right? As much as I agree with that, here’s another truth for you. During the time you are planning your wedding, organization is your best friend! Purchase one or make your own. A three-ring binder with notebook paper, sketching paper, and large envelopes (samples) will go with you everywhere. Absolutely everything pertaining to the wedding day and reception goes into this notebook. Sample fabrics, the guest list, ideas for gifts, names and contact information for all of your vendors, photographs of the cake, dress, payment information, etc. will go into this notebook.
A general time frame for each task might go as follows.
1) Secure the location for the wedding ceremony and for the reception. Do this one year from the intended wedding date. Secure the officiant for the ceremony at this time too.
2) Have an engagement photograph taken. Send announcements to family and friends and your local newspaper 9 to 12 months prior to the wedding date.
3) Decide on the style of your wedding. Everything from the decorations, dresses, colors, flowers, and possibly even the photographs will hinge on this decision, so make it relatively quickly.
4) You and your husband-to-be must decide on a budget before you get too far along in the planning. I know, budget is an ugly word for some people. But trust me ladies, you don’t want the planning of your wedding day to be the first really big fight you and your husband-to-be have! Set a budget and stick with it.
5) Make out the guest list. This should be done in the first month or two since the number of people will help determine the budget.
6) Decide who will stand up for each of you in the wedding party. Both of you should agree on this before asking family members or friends to be in the wedding. Once you’ve decided, ask them.
7) Within nine months, shop for wedding bands. Secure your caterer and photographer and videographer. Shop for your wedding dress and headpiece.
8) Six months ahead, line up a bakery to do your wedding cake, book a florist, and register for gifts.
9) Bridesmaids dresses, mother’s dresses, and tuxedos should all be ordered within at least four to six months prior to the wedding date.
10) Send out invitations about two months before your wedding day.
11) One month before your wedding day, get blood tests and your marriage license.
Each bride has special touches she adds to her wedding day. Be sure to include everything you have always wanted for your special day. It only happens once, so make it the very best day of your life.
There are so many other details that went into planning my wedding. But these are some of the highlights that I hope will help you in planning yours. Congratulations! Enjoy your beautiful and romantic wedding day!
